Roundup for April

Wheee! It's been a while since I've done one of these as I've been out of the reccing and writing loop for a bit.

*gratuitously steals formatting from Abyssis*

Fic I done recced:

I grabbed the humor category this time around at < lj comm="stargateficrec"> and, wheeeee! did I have fun digging out all of those picfics from my bookmarks. In fact I only managed to rec 4, so I've got the category again for this month. :D

The Elephant in the Corner by the ever loverly [livejournal.com profile] pepper_field (who also had a birthday!)
Stick!figures, Vala and Jack evil plotting! Cam and a bag o' macaroons!

Stargate SG-1 Screw: Episode 2 by Eugeal
SG-1 as nuts and bolts! Pure crack, this one.

Final Images by [livejournal.com profile] astridv
Intrepid MALP's and their deaths!

The Pegasus Tinies by [livejournal.com profile] argosy and [livejournal.com profile] _kiden
SGA Edmund Gorey style!

Fic I done wrote:

Heee! I was productive this month and wrote 2 fics and changed mah layout:

That Inverted Bowl We Call the Sky | (PG) | 1807 words
Shau'ri, Pre-Series, Shauri/Daniel

I'd been thinking a lot about Abydos and Shau'ri, and after many rewrites this fic managed coalesce around the idea of holding on to what you have.

Press Four To Save | (G) | 1775 words
Classic Team, humor

Hehe, [livejournal.com profile] beanpot sparked this leetle crack!fic from me, with her saga of the garbled phone message left by the hawt Frenchman. I have missed just dashing off this kind of writing :D

Fic I done read:

The Hidden Lore of the Old Ocean by [livejournal.com profile] havocthecat (PG-13)
Teyla Emmagan/Elizabeth Weir, John Sheppard/Elizabeth Weir

I really loved this fic. It hit all of my atmospheric buttons and has this fragmentary descent into treading right along the edge of horror. Great Lovecraftian overtones and a Teyla that has a genuinely Alien feel to her.

The Rites of Hedona by [livejournal.com profile] surreallis (R)
AMTDI, Het, Sam/Daniel

A re-read :D But one that I hadn't read in a loooong time. And it was just as awesome as I remembered it. To me, this fic is my ultimate AMTDI scenario that acknowledges the awkwardness and fear of consequences, but turns it into something other that just a porny interlude. It's thinky and well characterised and also rather hot as well.

Family Recipes by [livejournal.com profile] beanpot (G)
Cam, Gran'ma Mitchell

Now, I've still not yet managed to see Line in the Sand and somehow got it into my head that Cam's Grandmother was an integral part to this episode and thus didn't read this fic when it was first written! Hehehe!! But it's a really delightful interlude with the kind of 'genteel with a backbone of steel' matriarch that I love to think heads the Mitchell clan.

It's here!

*spins around*

I've been haunting my mailbox all day and it finally arrived :D

'The Ark of Truth' is our primetime 11.00pm viewing for this evening. Hehehe - the brother even phoned to tell me not to start watching until he gets home.

Squeeeee!!!!!

I think I'll be needing another Teal'c icon to celebrate his awesomeness (now that I have room for one)

And then I can go hunt up fic that I have been avoiding due to spoilers. If you've written anything drop me a link in the comments.

Woohoo! April!

And daylight savings has officially ended *parties like it's 1999 lyk whoa*

I'm back reccing for [livejournal.com profile] stargateficrec - and in one of my all time favourite categories, humor.

*dances with glee*

I've just glanced over my bookmarks and... I have enough to rec a fic for every day of the month and then some... But I shan't do that. I'll restrict myself to picfic, because everyone loves a good dose of crack to get them going in the morning and they only take a few minutes to read.

There is fic all over the flist!

Huzzah for [livejournal.com profile] moonshayde having a timely birthday! For those interested, [livejournal.com profile] sg_fignewton has rounded up links and also has Daniel Alphabet Soup for additional glee!

Don't forget to archive them on your LJs writerly peeps - so I can write feedback!

[livejournal.com profile] beanpot has written loverly thinky thoughts on Teal'c and his epic arc here, to which I must add my own opinions

[livejournal.com profile] pepper_field is having a Spam me with your favourite Jack quote (or moment) Thursday *glee*

I am enjoying the [livejournal.com profile] sga_genficathon fics that are being released from their moderating queue :D Fics, every day for most of this month!

[livejournal.com profile] sg1friendathon is open for prompt claiming and I am eying off #33 for it tempts me, also #31 for that matter as it's an Abydos prompt... *whaps muse*

And while I'm here, a drive-by rec:

"Scattered Shards by [livejournal.com profile] abyssinia4077, which was written for last year's gateverse remix but I had never actually gotten around to reading (and that was a mistake!)

This is moebius!Daniel and is an achingly beautiful, lyrical fic that was just excellent.

Ironic, that I can't think of a title

My muse is somewhat traumatised by my hacking and slashing of over 5000 words from a WIP last night, thus reducing it to quivering with fear that I'll take away its porn quality inspirational reading, or something equally heinous (like subjecting it to copious amounts of Hardy - muse has yet to forgive me for that whole 'Tess' debacle, though I maintain it was forced upon us by an unfeeling education system.)

But, it had to be done, muse!

It was for its own good!

The good Bunne ([livejournal.com profile] katiefoolery) was shaking her head at me as I managed to add 500 words while converting horrific run on sentences to something resembling prose.

WTF, muse? How did you manage to add words, when the intention was to slim things on down?

So, instead of the writerly equivalent of a diet, where we attempt to shed a few pounds by avoiding rich description and thesauri (always a source of hidden full fat words) and exercising the use of full stops and punctuatory sundries, we were forced into drastic liposuction-y surgery!

And recovery from that is a bitch!

As an aside, Firefox and its inline spellchecker believes I have coined a new word - alas, google has dashed my hopes of erudite expression. Punctuatory isn't in the dictionary... yet! But is nonetheless beloved by like-minded, wordmashing souls

So, while I spoon feed poor muse with syllabub and soothing promises of smut, I shall meme.

[livejournal.com profile] kellifer_fic is talking about the art of making titles and I wish to stick my oar in... )

So it was Abyssis' birthday and we all got together to write her 26 (ha! 27) ficlets using all the letters of the alphabet :D

"Defining Sam from A-Z"

Here are mine:

O is for O'Malley's )

And [livejournal.com profile] abyssisinia4077 wrote A whole heap of awesome alphabet fic herself, thus proving that great minds do indeed think alike.

Roll over! Roll over!

I have officially figured out where my multishipping whore tendencies come from...

I used to love moving the dial on this book and bumping out all those extra people from the bed one by one and then right at the end they'd all come back because just one is too lonely!

The discerning eye will note that my S/D ship goes all the way back to when I was 5 years old...
rigel: (hearted gun)

*Pets shiny brand new computer*

Mmmmmmm dual core! super fast! massive huge amounts of memory! CS3! Recovered ALL of my previously lost data from dead computer number one!

I'm back baby!

Rigel 2.0

Huzzah! *does snoopy dance of joy*

And now I can get down to knocking out some quick!fic, as the lack of a computer seems to have lit a big ass fire under my muse-of-doom.

I re-watched "Stargate the Movie" for the first time in about 10 years or so - and I'd forgotten so much about it! Reflecting a little, I'm slightly disappointed that Shau'ri was given such a bum deal in the TV series and that Abydos, with its walled cities (It had a name! Nagada!) and HUGE population and all of the potential it held is reduced to a rabble of tents and cooking fires. :(

Also, a big fat HAPPY BIRTHDAY to [livejournal.com profile] abyssinia4077!! Have a loverly day!

Mar. 3rd, 2008

rigel: (Vala!)

In which I showcase my stalkeriffic tendencies...

Have you ever wanted to stalk randomly squee over someone because of their username?

And I'd totally go and do it, only she'd think I was completely batshit insane (*cough* possibly, this might be somewhat true, although my brand of batshit is fairly benign and limited to the more amoosing cracktastic picspam sprees...) and wouldn't you be slightly taken aback by such a declaration of love? :P

So I'll do it here *grins* and fangirl her from afar!

[livejournal.com profile] alizarin_nyc, every time I see your username it makes me smile and brings me glee! Because when I was in high school, me and my BFF were writing a romance novel together and we named our heroine Alizarin, mostly because I just adored the name - despite having first encountered it in chemistry (huzzah for litmus tests!). And later because it really is one of the most beautiful shades of red and we wanted to make her the god daughter of a patron of the arts who chose her name for similar obscure reasons.

Sekritly, I'm thinking you really are from Regency England and have the very dashing Lord Lucien falling in love with you as you play out your madcap schemes all over London's haute ton.

Good times!

Also, there were pirates and highwaymen.

Your screen name was in excellent company!

CLEARLY, the crack!bad!fic comes to my muse far too easily... I blame Abyssis who dared me to do this!

Tittle: The River of Life

Summary: A mysterious woman comes thru the gate. Why is Daniel so attracted to her and does she hold the key to unlocking his lost memories?
A/N: Oh wow, I've been wanting 2 write this for ages. It all came up when [livejournal.com profile] abyssinia4077 asked me how we could get Daniel naked on a leash and so this was just PERFECT!

'Unscheduled offworld activation!' Harriman said urgently and pressed the alarm. )

But enough about my sartorial fabulousness!

[livejournal.com profile] abyssinia4077 is hosting (and currently taking prompts for) a Leap Gate comment-athon which promises to be MADE OF AWESOME and DELIGHT!

Go, frolic and set your busy minds to concocting gleeful prompt words for all to play with!

[livejournal.com profile] beanpot is having a Love-meme-of-squishy-hugs-and-adoration for fandom - You can comment anony-mousely with your message of fervent partiality for your particular inamorata, or spread the adulation for all!

Continuing my obsession with flash games that facilitate much procrastination and fun:
More Bloons
Shoot the balloons with darts (you may want to start off with unlimited darts as this one gets hard)

Now, back to hunting through the pit of voles - I have a yearning for some pimptastic bling - perhaps a crystalline tear wept from violet coloured eyes and a woobie on a leash that will prance in front of me and strew rose petals to announce my imminent and magnificent presence...

Damn...

I still have 134 images to retool. And then I have to make the stoopid 100 x 100 preview icons...

If only I could handily javascript this part on the damn website! But it would kill any peeps on dialup to preload that many images. :(

Le sigh.

Well, I've given myself until 6pm to finish this part. Which gives me the entire day tomorrow to somehow code the whole website, test it and then burn it to CD in time for delivery.

Did I mention I hate deadlines?

In the meantime, have a handy fandom secret that I just whipped up in my 10 minute break!

Jan. 31st, 2008

rigel: (gaius doesn't like you)

No, it's not blush - it's where I puched you in your nasty face!

Yup, I'm writing my resume in preparation for job applications...

*has mild panic attack*

The last time that I was employed full-time was 2002, and in England, in retail. And now that I'm a graduate with a glossy advanced diploma in my hot little hands, alas it is time to earn real money in the real world.

GAH! I really hate having to make positive, affirming statements about myself - it's just so... icky. I have no other word for it.

I went to a seminar today on interview skills seeing as I'm not really the greatest at that whole appearing-confident-yet-not-insane thing - I'm more likely to work myself up into a state of paralysis and just freeze on them, or babble on about off topic things. This either works really well for me, in that I hit it off with management straight away, or they conceive a horror for me and say the dreaded "Thanks, we'll be in touch." :P

'Twas interesting enough. But there was one thing that really irked me.

We were asked to come dressed as if it was a real interview so we could roleplay and they could point out if people were silly enough to wear paint splattered overalls and flip flops.

This is what I wore:

My chocolate brown chiffon skirt (3/4 length)
Black blouse (slightly frilly)
Black stockings with chevron pattern
Pointy shoes of awesome

I will also point out that I was well groomed. My hair was neat and held back with clips, I was wearing a simple gold necklace and matching bracelet. In short, I looked fine.

Only...

I wasn't wearing any make-up.

I don't wear make-up.

And the comment and discussion that sparked from this was one of the most horrifyingly mysogynist things I've ever had to sit through.

Because apparently, to not wear make-up is unprofessional and a sign that you take no pride in your personal appearance.

WTF?

And weirdly enough, the Bunne posted about it this morning (so I read and commented on that post and then had the eerie deja vu moment later) Alas 'tis flocked - but it was basically a rant on make-up and the fact that we oddbodds who choose not to partake of the powders and glosses and goop are generally either vaguely pitied for being plain janes who aren't with the program of femininity, or met with the "WTF, how can you not?" attitude.

Quoteage from [livejournal.com profile] katiefoolery:

And yet, sometimes I feel inadequate because I'm not. I can't help it. I'll come across discussions on random LJ comms where people are amazed at the idea of other people who don't make themselves up before leaving the house. Amazed and slightly horrified. Or other people who say, "I barely wear anything. Just some foundation, concealer, a little eye-liner and some lipstick". That's not barely anything. That's a whole waste of money. A whole waste of time. A whole bunch of chemicals your body can do without.

What is with the make-up fascists and their need to push it onto all and sundry? )

This is not the post you were looking for...

So it turns out my meta-ish post on my OTP Sam and Daniel may take a while, as I need diagrams and flow charts and screencaps with giant arrows to point out the burning UST and squeeful moments...

Hey, it's me! :P

So in the meantime, I'm making a post - unflocked so I can't get out of it - concerning my unfinished fandom commitments.

I, Rigel Mayson, hereby vow that I shall not sign up for any ficathons, start any new epic stories or create my Jack O'Neill, Daniel Jackson and Cameron Mitchell clones that are for *koff* aesthetic purposes only, until the following fics have been written and published.

Maybe I could just have Cam... )

Holy Hannah!

*hangs head in shame*

And I can't find for the life of me a linky to whoever is running the finish-a-thon checkin. I FAIL at scanning back on my flist :(

But consider me signed up!
